Bubonic plague is one of the types of plague that a Yersinia pestis infection can cause. Approximately 10 to 20 people in the United States acquire this disease each year from flea or rodent bites in rural areas of the Southwest. When bubonic plague is suspected, the person is often hospitalized and placed in isolation even before the diagnosis is confirmed.
